Jeju City mayor says area should maintain its unique atmosphere

The Jeju City mayor opposes requests by some residents to redevelop the (신산머루) Sinsanmeoru neighborhood.

During a September 20th meeting with reporters, Go Hee-beom said the area in Ildo 2-dong around Sinsanmeoru maintains the tranquil atmosphere of a traditional village. That’s why he thinks the urban renewal project in the area should proceed as it is planned.

The mayor added that the proposed redevelopment by some residents would go too far, and that it wouldn’t be right to sacrifice the community for their economic benefit.

고희범 시장 "신산머루 재개발 안돼"

일부 주민들이 요구하고 있는 제주시 신산머루 재개발에 대해 고희범 제주시장이 재개발 반대 입장을 밝혔습니다.

고 시장은 20일 출입기자들과 간담회를 가진 자리에서 도시재생 사업 대상인 제주시 일도2동 신산머루 일대는 고즈넉한 마을 정취가 남아 있는 곳이라며 도시재생 사업이 예정대로 추진돼야 한다고 강조했습니다.

특히 일부 주민들이 요구하는 재개발 방식에 대해서는 몇몇의 경제적 이익을 위해 마을을 갖다 바칠 수 없다며 불가 방침을 분명히 했습니다.
