Growing concerns Japan will fly Rising Sun Flag at next month’s event

The navy will host an International Naval Review at the Jeju Civilian-Military Complex Port next month, and it is allowing participating foreign navies to fly only their official national flags on their vessels.

This directive follows concerns that the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force would raise the Rising Sun Flag. That flag was used by Imperial Japan. It is viewed by many as a symbol of militarism, and its possible display at next month’s event is causing a growing controversy.

The five-day naval review begins October 10th. 21 vessels from 14 countries are expected to take part.


"제주관함식에 공식 국기만 게양" 요청

해군이 다음달 제주민군복합항에서 열리는 국제관함식과 관련해 각국 해군에 공식 국기만을 게양해 줄 것을 요청했습니다.

이같은 조치는 일본 해상 자위대를 염두에 둔 것으로 이번 관함식에 '욱일기'를 달고 참가할 것으로 알려지고 있기 때문입니다.

제주국제관함식은 다음달 10일부터 닷새간 열릴 예정으로 14개국에서 21척의 외국 군함이 참가할 예정이며 이 가운데 일본 군함이 군국주의 상징인 욱일기를 달 것으로 예상돼 논란이 일고 있습니다.
