5. ‘Daejeong-eup waters home to Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins’
Researchers first observed them there in 2016

Researchers have confirmed that Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins live in the waters off Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo.

The Cetacean Research Institute, which is part of the National Institute of Fisheries Science, has found dolphins in that area in each of the 18 surveys of local waters it has conducted over the past three years.

Researchers say the dolphins inhabit all coastal waters, but that they only appeared off Daejeong-eup the year before last.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries designated the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin as a protected species in 2013.

서귀포시 대정읍 연안에 남방큰돌고래가 정착해 서식하고 있는 것이 확인됐습니다.

해양수산부 국립수산과학원 고래연구센터는 최근 3년동안 제주도 전역에서 18차례 조사를 실시한 결과 서귀포시 대정읍 연안에서 매번 남방큰돌고래를 관찰했습니다.

남방큰돌고래는 제주도 전 연안에 서식하고 있지만 재작년부터 대정읍 연안에 상주하고 있는 것으로 보인다고 설명했습니다.

해양수산부는 지난 2013년 제주도 남방큰돌고래를 '보호대상 해양생물'로 지정했습니다.
