Japan refuses Korea’s request not to fly Rising Sun Flag
Japan was invited to the International Fleet Review, which will begin October 10th at the Jeju Naval Base.
The Japanese Navy said it would fly the Rising Sun Flag during the naval parade.
It said that the vessels from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force are required to carry the flag by Japanese domestic law, and that the flag is registered as the ensign of Japanese warships in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

With the controversy over the flag growing into a diplomatic tussle, Japan notified Korea that it would not be sending vessels to the naval parade.

‘Tokyo may have declined invite to prevent deeper issues’
Tokyo might be considering that if it insists that its warship carries the controversial imperialistic flag, Seoul would change its vessel at the event from the (일출봉) Ilchulbong to the (독도) Dokdo. This would undoubtedly cause further diplomatic issues.
