Jeju has the highest per capita violent crime rate in the country.

Lamaker (권미혁) Kwon Mi-hyeok, a member of the National Assembly’s Public Administration and Security Committee analyzed National Police Agency data that was collected through government inspections. According to it, Jeju had 510 cases of the five major violent crimes per 10,000 residents between 2015 and 2017.

Gwangju was next with 373, followed by Busan with 371 cases and Gangwon with 364. Gyeongbuk had the lowest incidence of violent crime: only 106 cases per 10,000 residents over the three-year period. That’s less than one fourth of the Jeju figure.

Lawmaker Kwon argued that Jeju needs specialized public safety policies because it is a popular tourist destination.

제주도가 인구 대비 5대 강력범죄가 가장 많이 발생하는 지역으로 나타났습니다.

국회 행정안전위원회 권미혁 의원이 경찰청으로부터 제출받은 국정감사 자료에 따르면 지난 2015년부터 지난해까지 제주에서 발생한 강력범죄는 인구 1만명 당 510건에 이르러 전국에서 가장 많았습니다.

다음으로 광주가 373건, 부산 371건, 강원 364건을 보였고 가장 적은 경북 106건에 비해 4배 이상 높았습니다.

권 의원은 관광객의 방문이 많은 대표 관광지인 만큼 지역 특수성을 고려한 치안정책이 필요하다고 강조했습니다.
