5. Seogwipo seeks to register ‘modern cultural asset’
Seok Ju-myeong Memorial Hall is tribute to scientist and scholar

Seogwipo is trying to register the (석주명) Seok Ju-myeong Memorial Hall as a modern cultural asset.

City officials began in August to collect data and study the plan. They plan to apply for the designation from the Cultural Heritage Administration in the first half of next year.

Officials say they will focus on remodeling and restoration after gaining the designation.

The facility is where butterfly expert Seok Ju-myeong collected butterflies and pursued Jeju studies from 1943 to 1945.

석주명 기념관 '근대문화재' 등록 추진

서귀포시에 있는 석주명 기념관을 근대문화재로 등록하는 작업이 추진됩니다.

이에 따라 서귀포시는 지난 8월부터 자료 수입과 관련 용역에 들어갔으며 내년 상반기 중으로 문화재청에 근대문화재로의 등록을 신청할 예정입니다.

등록된 뒤에는 리모델링과 복원사업을 이어갑니다.

석주명 기념관은 나비박사인 석주명 선생이 지난 1943년부터 약 2년 동안
나비 채집과 제주학 연구 등으로 이용하던 건물입니다.
