Buddhists from temple attacked Japanese forces in October 1918

The centennial ceremony for the anti-Japanese independence movement at (법정사) Beopjeongsa Temple was Sunday afternoon in the (천제연)Cheonjeyeon Falls parking lot in Seogwipo.

In his congratulatory message, Governor Won Heeryong said the temple has served as a connection point over the past 100 years between islanders and the patriots who lost their lives. He said the provincial government would spare no effort to maintain the historic site.

In October 1918, about 700 monks and other buddhists from Beopjeongsa Temple attacked Japanese forces at their Jungmun police substation. It was the largest anti-Japanese movement in the country until the March 1st Independence Movement the following spring.

법정사 항일운동은 지난 1918년 10월 일제의 국권침탈에 맞서 법정사 스님들과 불자 등 700여명이 중문 주재소를 공격했던 무장 투쟁으로 3.1 운동 이전 일제에 항거한 전국 최대규모로 평가받고 있습니다.
