Guilty of stealing a briefcase from a car, ￦65m in valuables from house

Jeju District Court has sentenced three Chinese nationals to two years in prison on theft charges.

Judge Hwang Mi-jeong found the three, including a 36-year-old surnamed Lee, guilty of stealing a briefcase from a parked car in Nohyeong-dong and breaking into a house and stealing 65 million won in valuables.

In explaining her decision, the judge said the three abused Jeju’s visa waiver program during their short stays here and that their crimes were carefully planned.

제주지방법원 형사2단독 황미정 판사는 무사증으로 입국한 후 제주시 노형동에 주차돼 있던 차량에서 서류가방을 훔치는가 하면 주택에 침입해 6천500만 원 상당의 금품을 훔친 중국인 36살 이 모 피고인 등 3명에게 징역 2년의 실형을 선고했습니다.

황 판사는 판결문을 통해 이들이 무사증 제도를 악용해 단기간 제주에 머물며 범행을 저질렀고 범행 수법이 치밀한 점에 비춰 이같이 선고한다고 판시했습니다.
