Governor argues Jeju is uniquely situated as summit venue

The governor says North Korean leader (김정은) Kim Jong-un has an open invitation to visit Hallasan Mountain and that South Korea’s highest peak could serve as a center for peaceful exchanges between the North and the South.

In a weekly meeting on Tuesday, Won Heeryong said both Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in showed strong interest in pursuing denuclearization, exchanges, and unification when they met at the summit of the North’s Baekdusan Mountain. The governor argued that it was only natural that those dreams are realized at the top of Halla.

Won added that he would actively prepare the island to host a summit between the two leaders so that Jeju, which bills itself as a center of peace, can be the site of historic discussions.

원희룡 지사가 김정은 위원장의 한라산 방문을 언제든지 환영하며 남북 평화교류의 중심지 역할을 해 나갈 것이라고 강조했습니다.

원 지사는 6일 오전 열린 주간정책 조정회의에서 이같이 말했습니다.

특히 백두산 정산에서 문재인 대통령과 김정은 위원장이 보여준 비핵화와 남북교류협력, 통일의 의지가 한라산 정상에서 실현되는 것은 당연한 일이라고 밝혔습니다.

또 역사적 논의가 평화 중심지인 제주에서 결실을 거둘 수 있도록 남북 정상의 한라산 방문을 적극 준비해 나가겠다고 강조했습니다.
