3. Plan for Bijarim Forest Road will be announced this month
Work on road halted in August following environmental destruction

There was a big controversy in August over environmental destruction caused by roadwork through (비자림) Bijarim Forest, and officials have delayed an official announcement of plans on how to proceed with the work.

The provincial director of city construction said in a Tuesday press briefing that the province had not yet made decisions on changes to the route of Bijarim Forest Road, detours around the construction site, or the type of trees that will be planted after the work is done.

(이양문) Lee Yang-moon added that an advisory committee will convene to discuss the issues, and that the province will make an official announcement of the plan by the middle of the month.

He added that more vehicles use the road every year, and that the daily average on the section under construction is up to 10,440.

훼손 논란을 빚은 비자림로 생태도로 조성 계획 발표가 늦어지고 있습니다.

이양문 제주도 도시건설국장은 6일 기자실 브리핑에서 도로 노선 변경과 우회도로 조성, 그리고 대체수종을 놓고 결론이 나지 않았다고 설명했습니다.

이어 자문위원회 회의를 거쳐 이달 중순까지 최종 계획을 공식적으로 발표하겠다고 밝혔습니다.

한편 제주도는 비자림로 확포장 구간의 하루 평균 차량 운행대수는 1만 440대로 교통량이 매년 증가하고 있다고 덧붙혔습니다.
