4. Nation’s highest prevalence of pediatric atopic dermatitis
7.3% of local children had skin condition in 2015

Among all of the nation’s children, the proportion of those suffering with atopic dermatitis is highest in Jeju.

The National Health Insurance Corporation and the Korean Atopic Dermatitis Association say that the prevalence in Jeju was 7.3 percent in 2015. That was the highest among the nation’s 17 provinces and major cities.

The association says the reason for the high rate is the high number of cedar trees in Jeju. Researchers say they can cause the skin condition.

제주지역 어린이의 아토피 피부염 유병률이 전국에서 가장 높은 것으로 나타났습니다.

국민건강보험공단과 대한아토피 피부염학회가 아토피 피부염 환자의 유병률 등을 분석한 결과, 2015년 기준 제주의 소아 아토피 유병률은 7.3%로 전국 17개 시.도 가운데 가장 높았습니다.

아토피 피부염학회는 도내 소아 아토피 환자 유병률이 높은 것은 아토피 피부염을 일으키는 삼나무가 많이 심어져 있기 때문으로 분석했습니다.
