Researchers cite low birthrate, aging population

If current trends continue, senior citizens will account for at least 36 percent of the Jeju population in 2045.

Statistics Korea says that, as it stands now, for every 100 island residents between the ages of 15 and 64 there are 20.3 people aged 65 and older. That’s higher than the national average of 19.6.

Researchers say that figure will climb to 68.6 by 2045, due to a low birthrate and an aging population. At that point, seniors would make up 36 percent of the local population.

Meanwhile, the economic participation rate of the elderly in Jeju as of last year was 46.5 percent.

오는 2045년이 되면 제주지역 65살 이상의 인구가 전체의 36%를 넘어설 전망입니다.

통계청은 올해를 기준으로 생산가능인구 즉 15살에서 64살까지 100명 당 65살 이상 인구를 나타내는 노령부양비가 제주의 경우 20.3명으로 전국 평균 19.6명 보다 많은 것으로 나타났습니다.

특히 저출산 고령화의 영향으로 오는 2045년에는 노령부양비가 68.6명으로 늘어나 전체 인구의 36%에 이를 것으로 예측했습니다.

한편 지난해 기준 제주지역 고령자의 경제활동 참가율은 46.5%를 기록했습니다.
