5. ‘Entire budget for IB curriculum should be cut’
Korean Teachers & Educational Workers Union strongly opposes plan

The Jeju branch of the Korean Teachers & Educational Workers Union says the move toward adopting the International Baccalaureate curriculum in local schools should be discontinued and that the budget for the project should be cut.

During a Wednesday press conference, union representatives said the provincial education office had earmarked 400 million won for the initiative, ignoring teachers’ opposition.

The KTU listed a number of problems with the plan. Among them, it claims there is no consensus regarding it, that it may lead to privileged education for some, and that it may create problems in university admissions within Korea. The union is therefore calling on the provincial council to revoke all funding for the project.

전국교직원노동조합 제주지부가 IB교육과정 도입 중단과 함께 관련 예산 삭감을 촉구했습니다.

전교조 제주지부는 28일 제주도교육청에서 기자회견을 열고 도교육청은 IB 교육과정 도입에 대한 교사들의 반대 목소리를 외면하고 관련 예산을 4억원 넘게 반영했다고 밝혔습니다.

그러면서 공감대 없는 일방적인 추진과 특권교육, 국내 대입 문제 등 IB도입에 따른 문제점을 지적하며 제주도의회는 관련 예산을 전액 삭감해야한다고 주장했습니다.
