‘April’s Camellia’ highlights horrors of April 3rd Incident

A Daejeong High School film club has received multiple awards for one of its short films.

The club is named “Remember the April 3rd Incident.” Its film, called “April’s Camellia,” received the grand prize at Jeju National University’s 16th Film Festival and the silver at the 4th Horizon Youth Film Festival.

The 28-minute film tells the story of a mountain village that was burned to the ground during the incident as well as the pain of people whose relatives were killed while they were held in what’s known as “preventive custody.”

The students donated the one million won in prize money they received to the April 3rd Association for the Disabled.

대정고 4·3 단편영화 잇따라 입상…상금 기부

대정고등학교 학생들이 제작한 4.3 단편영화가 영화제에서 잇따라 입상했습니다.

대정고등학교에 따르면 자율동아리 '4.3을 기억해'팀이 제작한 단편영화 '4월의 동백'이 제16회 제주대학교 영상제 대상과 제4회 지평선 청소년 영화제 은상인 황금줄기상을 잇따라 수상했습니다.

28분 분량의 이 영화는 4.3 당시 중산간 마을 초토화 작전과 한국전쟁 이후 예비검속으로 발생한 수많은 사상자 가족들의 아픔을 담아냈습니다.

동아리 학생들은 영화제에서 받은 상금 100만원을 4·3후유장애인협회에 기부했습니다.
