3. ‘No more for-profit hospitals during Moon administration’
Health minister tries to allay concerns regarding other free economic zones

The Minister of Health and Welfare says the Moon Jae-in administration will not allow any more for-profit hospitals to open.

During a Thursday meeting of the National Assembly’s health and welfare committee, (박능후) Park Neung-hoo said Greenland International Hospital was a special case because the authority to approve its opening was given to the provincial governor.

He attempted to allay concerns about for-profit hospitals opening in other free economic zones by pointing out that the health ministry has authority over the matter everywhere but Jeju.

Park emphasized that the national government would apply domestic laws to hold Greenland International to account for any illegal medical activities.

복지부 장관 "현 정부서 영리병원 더 이상 없어"

제주도가 국내 첫 영리병원 개원을 허가한 것과 관련해 박능후 보건복지부 장관은
현 정부에서 영리병원을 추진하는 일은 더 이상 없을 것이라고 밝혔습니다.

박 장관은 6일 국회 보건복지위원회에 출석해 이번 영리병원 허가는 병원 개설 허가권자가 제주도지사로 정해져 있어서 발생한 특수한 경우라고 설명했습니다.

다른 경제자유구역에서도 영리병원 설립을 추진할 것이라는 전망에 대해서는, 제주를 제외한 다른 지역에서는 개설 허가권자가 보건복지부로 돼 있기 때문에
권한을 행사할 것이라고 강조했습니다.

그러면서 영리병원의 의료상 불법행위는 국내법을 적용해서 확실히 처벌할 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.
