By 2032, 30,000 locals will be at least 85 years old

Researchers project Jeju’s population to hit 800,000 in a bit over ten years from now.

Seoul National University’s Population Policy Research Center has released a study on expected population changes. The report states that the number of official island residents, excluding foreign nationals and tourists, will hit 800,000 by around 2030 and then 850,000 about ten years later.

Researchers say the population will get older, too: the number of locals 85 and up is expected to more than triple to over 30,000 in 2032.

The provincial government will use these research results to craft a comprehensive plan on population policies.

"2030년 제주인구 80만 명…고령화"

오는 2030년쯤 제주 인구는 80만 명에 이를 것이라는 연구 결과가 나왔습니다.

서울대 인구정책연구센터가 발표한 제주의 인구변화 예측방안 연구용역 보고서에 따르면 오는 2030년쯤 외국인과 관광객 등을 제외한 제주의 주민등록 인구는 80만 명, 2040년에는 85만 명으로 추계됐습니다.

연구진은 2032년이면 85살 이상 인구가 올해보다 세 배 가량 늘어난 3만 명을 돌파하면서 인구 고령화가 가속화될 것으로 예상했습니다.

제주도는 이번 용역결과를 제주 인구정책 종합계획 수립에 활용할 방침입니다.
