2. Human Rights Commission concerned about denied asylum seekers
‘Officials must carefully review any appeals’

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea has issued a statement expressing concern for the Yemenis who were not granted refugee status in the country.

The Jeju Immigration Office on Friday announced its final decisions on the matter. It granted refugee status to only two applicants, arguing that civil war and forced conscription may not be considered grounds for granting refugee status. The human rights commission said it was disappointed with that decision.

The commission also expressed concern for the futures of the 412 Yemenis who were granted humanitarian stay permits and the 56 who were granted no type of stay whatsoever. It maintained officials must carefully consider their cases if they appeal the decisions.

이번 난민 최종 결정과 관련해 국가인권위원회는 14일 성명을 내고 난민 지위가 불인정된 신청자들에 대한 우려의 뜻을 밝혔습니다.

국가인권위원회는 내전이나 강제징집 피신은 난민 불인정 사유가 될 수 없다며 난민 인정자가 2명에 불과한 제주 출입국청의 결정에 아쉬움을 드러냈습니다.

그러면서 단순 불인정된 56명의 신변과 412명에 달하는 인도적 체류허가자들이
앞으로 처할 상황이 우려된다며 이들의 이의신청이 있을 경우 면밀한 검토가 필요하다고 주문했습니다.
