Opponents say proposal would change nothing

Some civic groups and progressive political parties oppose a proposal to directly elect the island’s mayors, who are now appointed, because the proposal wouldn’t give the mayors autonomy to run their cities as they see fit.

Representatives from ten civic groups and progressive parties held a press conference Monday at the Provincial Office. They argue that Governor Won Heeryong wants to pass his proposal without consensus. They also maintain that the introduction of direct mayoral elections would be no different from the current appointment system because the position of mayor would still not be considered a legal entity.

They called on the provincial council to reject the proposal.

제주 10개 시민사회단체와 진보 정당은 17일 도의회 도민의 방에서 기자회견을 열고 "원희룡도정이 공감대 없이 자치권 없는 행정시장 직선제를 밀어붙이고 있다"면서 "법인격이 없는 제주도의 하부 행정기관장에 불과한 행정시장을 직선제로 선출한다 해도 달라지는 것은 없다"며 행정시장 직선제 철회를 주장했습니다.

그러면서 제주도의회도 '행정시장 직선제' 동의안을 부결시켜야 한다고 촉구했습니다.
