1. Province cancels subsidized housing project
700 units had been planned for Citizen Welfare Town

The provincial government has canceled plans to build subsidized housing in the Citizen Welfare Town.

In a Thursday press conference from the Provincial Office, Administrative Vice Governor Jeon Seong-tae said the site in the Donam neighborhood of Jeju City will instead be set aside for public facilities.

The vice governor said the project was found to be in line with the national government’s housing plan, which was released on December 13th. Jeon explained that the provincial government canceled it because of the controversy it had caused, and he then apologized to island residents for the confusion.

Seoul selected this project in 2016 as part of a government contest. The plan was to build 700 residential units for people who struggle to provide their own housing, such as those just entering the workforce.

제주특별자치도가 도남 시민복지타운 행복주택 조성 계획을 백지화했습니다.

전성태 행정부지사는 20일 오전 도청에서 기자회견을 열고 시민복지타운 행복주택 건립 계획을 백지화하고 도민 공공시설용지로 남겨두겠다고 밝혔습니다.

전 부지사는 지난 13일 제출된 개발공사의 타당성 조사 결과는 정부 주거복지 방향과 부합한 사업으로 결론났지만,

팽팽한 찬반 여론을 감안해 백지화 결정을 내렸다며 도민 사회 혼란을 끼친 점에 대해 사과했습니다.

시민복지타운 행복주택 사업은 지난 2016년 정부 공모사업으로 선정돼 사회초년생 등 주거취약계층을 위해 7백 세대를 공급할 계획이었지만, 2년여 만에 숱한 논란만 남겨두고 무산됐습니다.
