Participating Seogwipo homes cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2,590 tons

Officials say the island’s carbon point system is having its intended effect of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Seogwipo officials surveyed the amount of electricity used by participating households in the first half of the year, and found that they saved a total of 6,100 megawatt-hours of power. That’s equivalent to a reduction of 2,590 tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

Officials say it would take 940,000 20-year-old trees to remove the same amount of carbon from the atmosphere.

Seogwipo will provide a total of 75 million won in incentives to the 85-hundred local households that cut their electrical use by the most.

온실가스 감축을 위한 탄소포인트제가 성과를 거두고 있습니다.

서귀포시가 올 상반기에 탄소포인트제 가입세대의 전기사용량을 분석한 결과 6천 100 메가와트시(Mwh)를 절감해 2천 590톤의 온실가스 배출을 감축한 것으로 나타났습니다.

이같은 절감량은 20년산 소나무 94만 그루를 식재한 효과와 같다고 서귀포시는 설명했습니다.

이에따라 서귀포시는 탄소포인트제 운영에 따른 우수 가정 8천 500세대에 올 상반기분 인센티브로 7천 500만원을 지급합니다.
