Violators will be fined ￦100,000 from April

Smokers who light up around kindergartens and daycare centers will soon face fines.

Health officials say a revision to the National Health Promotion Law bans smoking within ten meters of kindergartens and daycares. The change goes into effect Monday.

Violators caught through the end of March will be warned. Beginning in April, they will be fined 100,000 won.

Before the legal change, it was illegal to smoke only inside kindergartens and daycare centers.

유치원·어린이집 주변 '금연구역 지정'

유치원이나 어린이집 주변에서 흡연할 경우 과태료가 부과됩니다.

보건당국에 따르면 국민건강증진법 개정으로 오는 31일부터 유치원과 어린이집 주변 10미터 구역이 금연구역으로 지정됩니다.

내년 3월까지 계도기간을 거치고 4월부터 해당지역에서 흡연할 경우 10만원의 과태료가 부과됩니다.

현재는 유치원과 어린이집 내부에서만 금연하도록 명문화 돼 있습니다.
