Likely tough year for construction industry

Experts predict economic growth to slow this year, and that it will be particularly tough for the construction industry.

The Jeju branch of the Bank of Korea forecasts slow growth in agriculture and manufacturing in 2019, but very bleak times for construction and in the tourism service sector. The overall local economy is expected to remain stagnant growth compared to last year.

Analysts say the protracted slump in construction could result in some small businesses filing for bankruptcy.

Bank representatives did say, however, that investments in social overhead capital and infrastructure may prop up the lackluster economy, if they are implemented as scheduled.

제주경제 성장세 둔화…건설업 부진

올해 제주경제는 성장세가 다소 둔화되는 가운데 건설업을 중심으로 극심한 부진이 이어질 것으로 전망됐습니다.

한국은행 제주본부는 올해 제주경제는 농림어업과 제조업의 완만한 성장에도 불구하고 관광관련 서비스업 둔화와 건설업의 부진이 이어지면서 지난해 대비 약보합의 성장세를 이어갈 것으로 전망했습니다.

특히 건설업은 부진이 지속되면서 영세업체의 경우 도산이 발생할 가능성이 있다고 밝혔습니다.

다만 사회간접자본과 인프라 관련 투자들이 예정대로 진행될 경우 부진이 다소 완화될 가능성도 있는 것으로 예측됐습니다.
