Province releases survey results

Local authorities say the island’s younger adults are working for relatively low wages while its older residents struggle to find any jobs whatsoever.

According to a provincial survey, workers aged 18 to 34 hoped to earn two million four hundred eighty thousand won per month, but that their average wage stands at just two million. That’s a gap of nearly 500,000 won.

On the other hand, people aged 50 to 64 report earning an average of two million four hundred forty thousand won per month, but that they are willing to work for one million seven hundred sixty thousand won. Analysts say that means there is a lack of jobs for them.

Analysts say there is also a mismatch in the employment situation. Jeju’s main industries are agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, but it’s the service sector that is hiring the most.

"청년 임금수준 낮고 장년층 일자리 부족"

제주도내 고용시장에서 청년층의 임금 수준은 낮고 장년층의 일자리가 부족한 것으로 조사됐습니다.

제주특별자치도의 제주도민 일자리 인식 실태조사 결과에 따르면 만 18살에서 만 34살 청년층의 희망 임금은 248만원이지만 실제 근로자 평균 임금은 2백만 원으로 50만 원 가까이 차이를 보였습니다.

반면 만 50살부터 64살 장년층의 월평균 임금은 244만 원이지만 176만 원이면 일을 할 수 있다고 답해 장년층 일자리가 상대적으로 부족한 것으로 나타났습니다.

아울러 제주의 주력 산업은 농림어업이지만 고용 직종은 서비스 종사자가 가장 많아 일자리 미스매치도 여전한 것으로 조사됐습니다.
