Problem most pronounced in rural communities

Every year, more pets are abandoned in Jeju.

Local officials say the number of animals abandoned at shelters increased from 3,000 in 2016 to 58-hundred in 2017 to 8,000 last year. They also say the problem is concentrated in rural areas, where fewer animals are registered as pets, and that many of the abandoned animals are less than three months old.

In response, the province plans to expand both its pet registration efforts in rural areas and its financial support for pet neutering.


유기 반려동물 매년 급증…지난해 8천마리

제주에서 버려지는 반려동물이 매년 급증하고 있습니다.

제주특별자치도에 따르면 동물보호센터에 입소하는 유기동물은 지난 2016년 3천 마리에서 2017년 5천 8백 마리, 지난해 8천 마리로 늘었습니다.

특히 동물등록률이 낮은 읍면지역에서 3개월 미만 어린 반려동물이 버려지는 경우가 많다고 제주도는 설명했습니다.

이에 따라 읍면지역 반려동물 등록사업을 확대하고 반려견 중성화수술비 지원도 확대할 계획입니다.
