Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention. 제주에도 클럽 마약?…경찰 수사 확대 지난 달 경남에 있는 노래주점과 외국인 전용 클럽 등에서 엑스터시와 케타민 등 마약류를 판매한 판매책과 유통 조직이 해경에 검거됐습니다. 전국적으로 클럽이나 술집에서 마약 범죄가 잇따르는 가운데 제주에서도 유사 마약 사범이 검거됐습니다. 모 클럽 관계자였던 30대 A 씨가 지난 달 엑스터시 수십 정을 소지하고 투약한 혐의로 구속됐습니다. 제주지검은 A 씨를 마약류 소지와 투약 혐의로 구속 기소했고 함께 투약한 이들에 대해서도 보완 수사를 진행하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 엑스터시는 필로폰보다 환각 작용이 3배나 큰 신종 마약류로 젊은 층이 주로 투약하면서 일명 클럽용 마약으로도 알려졌습니다. <인터뷰 : 고광언/ 한국마약범죄학회 제주지회장> 엑스터시를 투약하면 환각작용을 일으켜서 기분이 아주 상승되는 효과를 누리는 마약으로 알려지고 있습니다. 젊은 사람들이 많이 이용하는 마약으로 보면 되겠습니다. 제주경찰청은 이번 사건은 클럽과는 무관하다면서도 구체적인 혐의점 등은 수사가 진행 중이여서 밝히기 어렵다고 전했습니다. 지난해 관세청이 적발한 신종 마약류는 260kg으로 2년 전보다 10배 이상 급증했습니다. 이 가운데 엑스터시 적발 물량은 같은 기간 7배나 늘었습니다. 제주에서도 엑스터시 마약 사범이 검거된 가운데 개인의 단순 범죄가 아닌 전국 사례처럼 연관 업종으로 범죄가 퍼졌을지 수사 결과에 관심이 모아지고 있습니다.

The current warning system employs three stages: Caution, Serious, and Very Serious. The Ministry of Public Administration and Security is adding a stage and changing their labels to Attention, Caution, Alert, and Serious. The ministry is also expanding its mid-term drought forecast, which projects dry conditions two months in advance. Last spring, some parts of Jeju had inadequate supplies of water for both living and industrial use. Heat waves later resulted in drought conditions and crop damage. Fewer passengers on Jeju ferries Officials blame weather, overall drop in tourist arrivals As the number of tourists coming to the island has fallen, so too has the number of people using local ferries. Local officials say about 1.24 million people had taken ferries to Jeju Port last year as of November. That’s only 77 percent of the total from the previous year. The number of passengers on ships between Jeju and Marado/Gapado fell to 79 percent what it had been. The provincial government will work with the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency to inspect 14-hundred locations, including livestock product packaging and processing companies as well as large retailers. Authorities will be making sure products have proper origin labels and that the livestock product traceability system is being implemented. Local officials say the number of animals abandoned at shelters increased from 3,000 in 2016 to 58-hundred in 2017 to 8,000 last year. They also say the problem is concentrated in rural areas, where fewer animals are registered as pets, and that many of the abandoned animals are less than three months old. The Jeju branch of the Bank of Korea says the sales index at large retailers fell 8.7 percent in November compared to the year before. The largest declines were in sales of footwear, bags, clothes, and cosmetics. The Consumer Composite Sentiment Index in December stood at 98.4?shy of the benchmark score of 100. 경기 불황 제주지역 소비 둔화 경기불황으로 인해 제주지역의 소비가 크게 둔화됐습니다. 한국은행제주본부에 따르면 지난 11월 제주지역 대형소매점 판매액지수는 지난해 같은 기간보다 8.7% 떨어진 것으로 나타났습니다. 신발과 가방, 의복, 화장품 등을 중심으로 소비 둔화가 이어졌습니다. 12월 소비자심리지수도 98.4에 머물며 기준값인 100을 밑돌았습니다.

  • The government plans to build about 16-hundred relatively small subsidized rental apartment units this year in Jeju. Mike Balfour has more in this report. This is the community center in (일도) Ildo 2-dong, Jeju City. The building is more than 30 years old. It will be torn down and a new building will replace it. [slug] Ildo 2-dong community center to be rebuilt The construction for the building was approved by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport at the end of last year. The building will have 2 underground levels and ten floors. It will be occupied by 120 Happy Housing units and governmental offices. [slug] New building to have government offices and subsidized housing Happy Housing ranges from 21 to 39 square meters in size. These units are being specifically targeted at younger people who are new to the workforce, newlyweds, university students, and lower income individuals. The province also has other supply plans finalized. 80 Happy Housing units will be created in (중앙동) Jungang-dong, Seogwipo City. More Happy Housing units will be provided in (건입동) Geonip-dong, Jeju City. [slug] 140 ‘Happy Housing’ units planned for Geonip-dong They will be located at the parking lot of the (김만덕) Kim Man-duk Memorial Museum. The construction for the 140 units is planned to begin before the end of this year. The construction plan for 684 Happy Housing units across the island including (건입동) Geonip-dong, (한림) Hallim and (서홍동) Seohong-dong has been finalized. Construction for 1,630 rental units including 391 10-year-long rental units at the Jeju Science Park and 346 units in (성산읍) Seongsan-eup will begin or be completed within this year. The province is now reviewing plans to find lots to provide new apartments to replace the canceled 700 unit provision project in (도남동) Donam-dong . One farm can hire up to 4 seasonal workers for 90 days. Fish consignment sales in Jeju City surpass ￦200b Volume sold up 26% last year, sales up 9% Fish consignment sales from boats that work the waters around Jeju City exceeded 200 billion won last year. Officials say 30,454 tons of fish were sold on consignment through the three (수협)Suhyup branches in the city. That’s a 26 percent increase over 2017. Gross sales were up 9 percent to 235.3 billion won. The amount of yellow corvina sold on consignment increased 28 percent by volume and 19 percent by value. The volume of hairtail sold was up 13 percent, but gross sales were up only 1 percent. Finally, both the amount and the monetary value of tilefish sold on consignment last year fell. 제주시 어선어업 위판액 2천억 넘어 지난해 제주시 지역 연근해 어선어업 위판액이 2천억원을 넘어섰습니다. 제주시에 따르면 지난해 제주시 3개 수협에서 위판한 어종별 위판실적은 3만454톤에 2천353억원으로 전년보다 위판량은 26%, 위판액은 9% 증가했습니다. 특히 참조기 위판량은 전년보다 28%, 위판액은 19% 늘어난 것으로 집계됐습니다. 갈치는 위판량이 13% 늘었지만 위판액은 1% 증가하는데 그쳤고 옥돔은 위판량과 위판액이 모두 감소한 것으로 나타났습니다.
