5. Updates to drought warning system
Warnings to be categorized into 4 categories

Authorities are adding an additional stage to official drought warnings.

The current warning system employs three stages: Caution, Serious, and Very Serious. The Ministry of Public Administration and Security is adding a stage and changing their labels to Attention, Caution, Alert, and Serious.

The ministry is also expanding its mid-term drought forecast, which projects dry conditions two months in advance.

Last spring, some parts of Jeju had inadequate supplies of water for both living and industrial use. Heat waves later resulted in drought conditions and crop damage. The updates to the drought warning system are part of efforts to respond to those problems.

가뭄 경보 3단계서 4단계로 세분화

올해부터 가뭄 경보가 세분화됩니다.

행정안전부는 가뭄 예보와 경보를 현행 3단계에서 4단계로 세분화하기로 했습니다.

이에 따라 종전 '주의, 심함, 매우 심함' 등 3단계에서 '관심, 주의, 경계, 심각' 등 4단계로 나눠졌습니다.

또 두 달 뒤 가뭄 상황을 예측하는 중기 가뭄 예보를 확대할 방침입니다.

이는 지난해 봄 제주를 비롯해 일부 지역에 생활, 공업용수 부족 현상이 발생한데다 폭염이 가뭄으로 이어져 밭작물 피해가 컸던 점을 보완하기 위한 조치입니다.
