2. ‘Singugan’ underway
Traditional moving season ends this Friday

The island’s traditional moving season has begun.

Singugan begins on the fifth day after “Daehan” on the lunar calendar, and it ends three days before “(입춘) Ipchun.” This year, it began on January 25th and ends February first.

Legend has it that the 18,000 gods of Jeju return to heaven during Singugan--giving local residents the chance to do things like move, fix barns, or repair houses without disturbing them.

It’s due to this custom that Jeju people have traditionally moved during the winter, despite the cold weather. The tradition continues, but it is not as strong as in years past.

제주 지역 독특한 이사 풍습 ‘신구간’ 시작

전통적인 제주의 이사철 신구간이 시작됐습니다.

제주에서는 대한 후 5일째부터 입춘이 되기 3일전까지 일주일 동안을 신구간이라고 부르는데 25일부터 다음달 1일까지 입니다.

이 기간 인간세상을 관장하는 제주의 1만8천여 신들이 임무교대를 위해 하늘로 올라가 제주도민들은 이 시기에 이사를 하거나 외양간 수리, 집 고치기 등 평소에 하지 못했던 일들을 처리해 왔습니다.

이러한 전통 풍습에 따라 제주에서는 추운 날씨에도 불구하고 겨울에 이사를 하는 진풍경이 벌어졌는데 이전과 같지는 않지만 신구간 이사 풍습은 여전히 이어져 오고 있습니다.
