Many fewer being adopted

The local animal shelter is dealing with a two-pronged problem: more abandoned animals and fewer adoptions.

Provincial authorities say the island’s shelter took in around 3,000 abandoned animals in 2016. That number nearly tripled to 8,000 last year.

The adoption rate more than halved over the same period?from 26.3 percent to 12.5 percent.

As part of efforts to encourage the adoption of abandoned pets, the province offers owners up to 200,000 won for neutering.

동물보호센터로 들어오는 유기동물은 느는 반면 분양률은 크게 낮아지고 있습니다.

제주특별자치도에 따르면 동물보호센터에 입소한 유기동물은 지난 2016년 3천 마리에서 지난해 8천 마리로 세 배 가까이 증가했습니다.

반면 유기동물 분양률은 2016년 26.3%에서 지난해 12.5%로 절반 이상 감소했습니다.

제주도는 유기동물 분양을 장려하기 위해 지난해부터 중성화수술비로 최대 20만 원까지 지원하고 있습니다.
