Plans were drawn up in 2012 for a number of community development projects in (강정) Gangjeong. They have finally been approved, and 960 billion won in work will be done over the next seven years. Joseph Kim reports.

₩6.8b Gangjeong Community Center
This is the (강정) Gangjeong Community Center completed last year on which 6.8 billion won was spent.
The construction of the community center is one part of development plans for the village after years of conflicts and disagreements about the Jeju Civilian-Military Complex Port in (강정) Gangjeong Village.
The community center includes rooms for senior citizens, offices, rental houses and a public health center and a concert hall.
A number of community development projects planned from 2012 in the village were approved in seven years.

Ministry of the Interior and Safety approves development plans
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety reviewed and approved the community recovery projects proposed by area residents and the national government.
Among 39 approved projects, renewable energy generation from wind and solar farms, creation of ecological parks, and improvement of residential environment were proposed by area residents and creation of navy museum and diver support center were proposed by Seoul.
960 billion will be needed for the projects through 2025.

The provincial office will give presentations on plans for securing the needed national funding for the projects. After that, departmental heads will come to Gangjeong to give presentations on how the projects will be carried out.

5 projects rejected
Meanwhile, five projects including creation of eco-friendly farming zone and expansion of entry road to the Jeju Civilian-Military Complex Port haven't been approved because they need to be further discussed with the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
Area residents are going to propose additional projects that would create jobs and income to Seoul.

President: community recovery ‘top priority’ in Gangjeong
After attending the 2018 International Naval Review, President Moon Jae-in visited Gangjeong Village and held a meeting with village residents. He promised national funding for the community development.
