1. Governor fined ￦800,000 for Election Law violations
Won Hee-ryong allowed to keep position because fine is below ￦1m

The governor has been fined 800,000 for Election Law violations in the first trial of the case.

Won Hee-ryong was indicted for violating the Public Official Election Act. He was charged with pre-electioneering. Prosecutors say he gave speeches before the official campaign season on May 23rd and 24th of last year at a wedding hall and at Jeju Tourism University.

The Jeju District Court judge in the case ruled Thursday that, although he found Won Hee-ryong guilty of serious transgressions, the speeches only outlined his election platform and sought voter support. They were also made in front of relatively small crowds. The court determined that the speeches had not had a significant effect on the election, and thus set the fine at 800,000 won.

Because the fine is less than one million won, the governor can keep his position.

선거법위반혐의로 기소된 원희룡 제주특별자치도지사가 1심에서 벌금 80만원을 선고받아 지사직을 유지할 수 있게 됐습니다.

제주지방법원 제2형사부는 원희룡 제주도지사의 선거법 위반 사건에 대한 1심 선고공판에서 이같이 판결했습니다.

재판부는 판결무에서 공소사실 모두 유죄로 인정되고 죄책이 가볍지 않지만 발언 내용이 단순 지지와 공약발표에 그친데다 청중도 소수에 불과해 선거에 중대한 영향을 미쳤다고 보기 어려워 이같이 선고한다고 판시했습니다.

이에 따라 원 지사는 현재 지사직을 그대로 유지할 수 있게 됐습니다.

원 지사는 지난해 5월 23일과 24일, 서귀포시 모 웨딩홀과 관광대학교 행사장에서
마이크를 사용하며 자신의 공약을 설명하고 지지를 호소한 혐의로 기소됐습니다.
