Neither party will pursue appeal

The governor was fined 800,000 won for violating the Public Official Election Act in the first trial of the case, and that ruling will stand now that both sides have decided not to appeal.

The Jeju District Public Prosecutor’s Office says its decision was based on its internal requirements for an appeal and the special nature of the case.

Won Hee-ryong says his decision not to appeal is based on a desire to focus on his duties as governor.

With no appeal coming, the ruling and the fine stand, meaning the governor can keep his position.



원희룡 지사 벌금 80만원 확정…항소 포기

공직선거법 위반죄로 원희룡 제주도지사에게 벌금 80만 원을 선고한 1심 재판 결과가 확정됐습니다.

제주지방검찰청은 원희룡 지사의 선거법 위반사건과 관련해 내부 항소 기준과 사안의 특수성을 고려해 항소를 제기하지 않기로 결정했습니다.

원희룡 지사 역시 오늘 법원 판결에 항소하지 않고 도정에 집중하겠다는 입장을 내놓았습니다.

검찰과 변호인 양쪽 모두 항소를 포기함에 따라 벌금 80만 원을 선고한 1심 판결이 확정돼 원희룡 지사는 지사직을 유지하게 됐습니다.
