1. Seoul to pardon 19 Gangjeong village residents
Base opponents receive amnesty on independence movement day anniversary

The national government will grant special pardons to a number of Gangjeong residents as part of centennial commemorations of the March 1st Independence Movement.

Attendees at a Tuesday cabinet meeting designated 4,378 people as recipients of the pardons. The list includes people who violated criminal law, those whose cases were deemed to demand special consideration, and people who were involved in major social conflicts.

19 Gangjeong residents who were found guilty of participating in illegal rallies against the establishment of a naval base in their town are among the pardon recipients. 17 will be reinstated, and the sentences for the remaining two will be revoked.

Some say the 19 pardons for Gangjeong residents are inadequate. Over 200 people were sentenced for their actions related to the naval base establishment.

3.1절 100주년 특별사면 대상에 강정마을 주민 일부가 포함됐습니다.

정부는 26일 국무회의를 통해 3.1절 100주년 특별사면 대상으로 일반 형사법과 특별배려 수형자, 사회적 갈등 사건 관련자 등 4천 378명을 확정했습니다.

특히 제주 해군기지 건설 관련으로 모두 19명이 포함됐으며 이 가운데 17명은 복권, 나머지 2명은 형의 선고 실효 등입니다.

하지만 해군기지 추진과 관련해 형이 확정된 대상은 200명을 넘고 있고 이 가운데 사면대상은 19명 뿐이어서 또 다른 논란이 일고 있습니다.
