Governor welcomes pardons for Gangjeong residents

The governor is welcoming the pardons, saying they provide momentum to ending conflicts in the village of Gangjeong and that they serve as a historic starting point to unite all islanders.

Won Hee-ryong also said his administration would do everything it could to improve communication with Gangjeong residents and help the community recover.

The governor then expressed his disappointment that only those Gangjeong residents who had already been sentenced had received the pardons. He said he will ask authorities to speed up the trials of those who haven’t been sentenced so they can be pardoned, as well.

원희룡 제주특별자치도지사는 강정마을 주민 특별사면에 따른 도민께 드리는 말씀을 통해 이번 결정으로 강정마을 주민 갈등에 마침표를 찍고 도민 대통합을 위한 역사적 출발점이 될 것이라고 강조했습니다.

제주도는 강정마을 주민들과 더욱 소통하면서 화합과 상생의 강정마을 공동체로 회복될 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다고 덧붙였습니다.

다만 이번 특별사면은 재판으로 형이 확정된 주민을 대상으로만 이뤄져 아쉽다며
나머지 주민에 대해서도 조속히 재판이 진행돼 사면될 수 있도록 건의하겠다고 밝혔습니다.
