3. ‘We will keep the spirit of independence alive’
Local religious leaders speak about March 1st Independence Movement

In a news conference related to the upcoming March 1st Independence Movement centennial, members of the Jeju Council of Religious Leaders Council vowed to do their part in passing down the spirit of the movement to future generations.

The council pointed out that a coalition of religions in Jeju helped spread the push for independence with the Anti-Japanese Movement at Beopjeongsa Temple in 1918 and then the Jocheon Mansae Movement. Council members said they would make every effort to keep the spirit of the independence movement alive.

The council’s member religions will hold worship and prayer ceremonies as well as other celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement.

제주종교지도자협의회가 3·1 운동 100주년 기념 기자회견을 열고 3·1 독립운동 기본정신을 후대에 전하겠다 선언했습니다.

특히 지난 1918년 법정사 할일항쟁운동을 시작으로 1919년 조천만세운동 등 종교 연합 독립운동을 전개했다며 제주 3·1독립정신을 새롭게 계승하고 발전시키기 위해 최선을 다하겠다 밝혔습니다.

또 이들은 종교별로 예배와 기도식, 영산대 등 다양한 3·1운동 100주년 기념행사를 개최하겠다고 덧붙였습니다.
