4. Cutlass fish catch plummets
Low water temperature drives fish away from Jeju

The cutlass fish catch plunged compared to last year.

According to Statistics Korea, the February cutlass fish catch measured 493 tons. This is down more than 70 percent from the 1,700 tons caught in the same period last year.

This is only a quarter of the five-year February average of 1,900 tons.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries said that the waters in west Jeju have shown a temperature drop of two degrees from the average, thus driving the cutlass fish to the East China Sea.

갈치 어획량이
지난해에 비해 큰 폭으로 감소했습니다.

통계청에 따르면
지난 2월 기준 갈치 어획량은 493톤으로
지난해 같은 기간
1천 7백여 톤에 비해 70% 이상 급감했습니다.

특히 5년 평균 2월 생산량 1천 9백여 톤과 비교해도
25% 수준에 머물렀습니다.

해양수산부는
갈치 주어장인 제주 서부해역 수온이
평년보다 최대 2도 낮아
갈치가 동중국해로
남하했기 때문이라고 밝혔습니다.
