3. Nat’l Fisheries Institute discovers invasive algae in Jeju shores
Special care advised to port facilities and ships

A mass of native algae, Sargassum horneri, was found near Jeju shores for the first time this year. The inedible algae invade the local shores every year and trouble port facilities and ships sailing.

The National Fisheries Research & Development Institute reported that about 10 lumps of Sargassum per hectare were found in eastern shores of the island last weekend. The size of the clusters ranges from 1 to 5 meters in diameter.

The satellite data confirmed a belt of Sargassums in the southern and northern waters of the island. An influx of the algae into the island’s shores is expected to continue.

국립수산과학원은
지난 20일과 21일 제주 동쪽 해역에서
직경 1에서 5미터에 이르는
괭생이 모자반 덩어리가
1헥타아르당 10개 정도가 발견됐다고 밝혔습니다.

위성 자료에서도
제주 남부와 북부 해역에서
괭생이 모자반 띠가 있는 것으로 확인돼
지속적인 유입 가능성도 예상되고 있습니다.

괭생이 모자반은 식용이 불가능한 해조류로
해마다 제주 해역으로 밀려들며
항만시설과 선박 운항에 지장을 주고 있습니다.
