5. Officials strive to preserve island’s native tongue
Jeju language will be introduced through various media

The provincial government is organizing various projects to preserve and pass down the Jeju’s native language.

The local government is currently operating a general counseling center specializing in the Jeju language called “(들어봅서)Deureo bobsseo”. Officials will also expand efforts to teach immigrants, elementary school students and the general public to the island’s native language.

A news program and an award for literary works in the Jeju language will be created. Sign boards, promotion leaflets and public transportation announcements will also be provided in the local language as well.

In January 2011, UNESCO added Jeju to its Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger as a “critically endangered language”, prompting urgent measures to preserve and pass down Jeju’s heritage.

대중교통에도 제주어 안내방송을 도입할 계획입니다.

현재 제주어는 유네스코로부터 '소멸위기언어'로 지정돼
보전과 전승이 시급한 실정입니다.
