This week on Jeju: A to Z, Todd Thacker takes a brief look at Jeolmul Natural Recreation Forest, another of the island’s wonderful outdoor treasures worth exploring at any time of the year.

There’s a certain seasonal quality to Jeju’s natural beauty. Each stage of the annual cycle brings with it new wonders. Early spring and autumn, though, are particularly pleasant.

When it comes to forest walks here on the island, Jeolmul Natural Recreation Forest in Bonggae-dong, Jeju City, has it all. A number of peaceful trails wind their way through 100 hectares of natural forest and 200 hectares of planted cedar and pine species.

Open since 1997, the function of this “recreation forest” is simple: visitors should be able to take in nature’s scenery and scents while shedding the stress of modern life.

There is plenty of room to sit and rest, explore, and even get creative with your photography. Among other facilities are a tree-lined outdoor exercise facility, a pond, a mineral water fountain, and large grassy area.

[Slug CG] An hour-long walk along Jangsaeng Forest Path
Jeolmul Oreum, a 700-meter-tall horseshoe-shaped volcanic cone is another popular destination within the forest. It offers up a pleasant hour-long hike and a great view from the observatory at its summit.

Another hour-long walk is along Jangsaeng Forest Path, named one of Jeju’s “31 hidden beauties” by the province.
