2. Korean Fir faces extinction on Hallasan
Indigenous mountain conifer marks 39% decline

Recent studies reported that Korean Fir, a species of fir native to the higher mountains of South Korea, is currently facing extinction. A huge decline in Korean Fir population at Hallasan Mountain marked the highest decline rate in the country.

The National Institute of Forest Science conducted a survey on endangered alpine coniferous species and found around 265 million trees in 7,000 hectares of land nationwide. One third of that number, however, showed signs of poor health.

The rate of decline in Korean Fir in Hallasan Mountain topped the nation at 39 percent.

The forest institute plans on designating a potential restoration site based on the genetic diversity and rate of decline of these coniferous species.

한라산 구상나무 고사 심각 … 멸종위기

한라산에 분포하고 있는
구상나무의 쇠퇴 현상이 심각한 것으로 조사됐습니다.

산림청 국립산림과학원이 발표한
멸종위기 고산 침엽수종에 대한 실태조사 분석 결과에 따르면,

전국적으로 구상나무는 약 7천 헥타아르에
265만 그루가 있으며
이 가운데 약 33%는
활력이나 건강도가 떨어져 쇠퇴한 것으로 나타났습니다.

특히 한라산 구상나무의 쇠퇴도가 39%로
전국에서 가장 높았습니다.

산림청은 침엽수종의 쇠퇴도와 유전적 다양성을 고려해
우선 복원 후보 대상지를 선정할 계획입니다.
