2. Local lawmakers oppose entry of corporate supermarkets
Concerns for small-medium merchants losing market share

Some provincial council members officially expressed their opposition to E-mart launching its large-sized supermarket "No Brand" in Jeju. E-mart is one of the largest retail companies in Korea.

An economic forum consisting 16 provincial council members made a statement on May 14th that the entry of a large market player in the local retail industry is a huge threat to the small and medium sized market players.

Forum members called for a system reform to protect small and medium-sized local supermarkets and regulate against expediencies of large-enterprises attempting to enter the local retail market.

영세상인들의 지역상권을 초토화하려는 의도라고 주장했습니다.

제주도는
중소상인들의 생존권을 보호하고
기업형수퍼마켓의 가맹점을 통한 편법 출점을 규제할 수 있도록
제도개선에 나서라고 요구했습니다.
