4. Mini cherry trees discovered in large numbers
More than 360 trees growing at an undisclosed location

A large group of mini cherry trees has been discovered on the island.

The National Institute of Forest Science said that the mini cherry tree is a rare species that only grow up to 50 centimeters in height.

The recent discovery found more than 360 mini cherry trees on the 0.6 hectare of land at the coastal rocks near the original habitat of the species. This is a huge number compared to 10 mini cherry trees recorded in 2013.

The forest institute plans on developing breeding techniques to preserve and save local mini cherry trees.

미기록 '미니벚나무' 대규모 자생지 발견

왕벚나무 원산지인 제주에서
국내 미기록 초소형 벚나무의 대규모 집단 자생지가 발견됐습니다.

산림청 국립산림과학원에 따르면
미니 벚나무는 높이가 50㎝ 미만으로
지난 2013년 10여 그루만 확인된 바 있는 희귀한 나무입니다.

이번에 발견된 장소는
기존 자생지 인근의 해안가 암석지대로
0.6ha 면적에 모두 360여 개체가 자라고 있는 것으로 확인됐습니다.

국립산림과학원은 앞으로 추가 연구를 통해
미니벚나무 보전과 자원화를 위한
증식 기술을 개발해나갈 계획입니다.
