Number of fishing households drops by half over 10 years

Fishing villages in Jeju have shown rapid graying with a significant drop in total population over the past decade.

According to a recent 10-year report released by the Honam Regional Office of Statistics, the number of local fishing households decreased by nearly half from 7,000 in 2009 to 4,000 in 2018.

The fishing workers population marked a 51.7 percent drop. Business owners in the industry also showed a distinct aging trend with a decline in the population of employers below 70 and an increase in those above 70.

Total fisheries output fell by 6.8 percent over the same period, while total sales increase due to a rise in price of certain products.

제주 어촌 인구 급감…고령화 뚜렷

최근 10년 사이
제주지역 어촌 인구가 크게 줄어들고
고령화도 심화되고 있습니다.

호남지방통계청이 발표한
최근 10년 간 제주도 바다의 변화상 자료에 따르면,
제주 어가 수는 2009년 7천여 가구에서
지난해 4천여 가구로 43% 감소했습니다.

어업에 종사하는 어가 인구도
10년 사이 51.7% 줄었습니다.

경영주를 연령별로 보면
50대 미만에서 60대까지 모든 연령층에서 감소했고
70대 이상만 증가하며
뚜렷한 고령화 양상을 보였습니다.

같은 기간 어업 총 생산량도 6.8% 감소한 반면
일부 품목의 높은 단가로
생산금액은 16.2% 증가했습니다.
