1. Japan strengthens quarantine inspection of Korean fish imports
Local halibut fishing households facing greater burden

The Japanese government is stepping up quarantine inspections on fish imports from Korea. Local fisheries exporting halibut to Japan are on high alert.

Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare announced plans to strengthen quarantine inspections of Korean fish imports due to the concerns over food poisoning in summer.

The ministry plans to double the inspection ratio of ark shells, pen shells, cockles and sea urchins to 20 percent and also double that of Halibuts to 40 percent.

This announcement highly concerns the fishing households in the island exporting lots of halibut to Japan.

Japan’s move is interpreted as a retaliation against Korea’s ban on fishery product imports from eight Japanese prefectures.

일본이 한국산 수산물 수입산에 대한 검역을 강화할 것으로 알려지면서
제주산 광어 수출에도 비상이 걸렸습니다.

일본 후생노동성은 30일에
우리나라에서 수입하는 넙치와
냉장 조개류,
성게 등에 대한 검역을 강화하는 내용을 발표 했습니다. (Fact Check!)

특히 넙치의 경우 전체 수입량의 20%에 대해서만 실시하던
모니터링 검사를
40%를 늘리는 것을 골자로 하고 있습니다.

이 때문에 대일 수출 의존도가 높은
제주도내 넙치어가로서는 큰 부담으로 작용할 전망입니다.

일본의 이같은 조치는
최근 수산물 수입 규제를 놓고
세계무역기구 분쟁에서
우리나라에 패소한데 따른 보복성으로 해석되고 있습니다.
