Japanese influenced artefacts and school names remain

In celebration of South Korea’s 100th anniversary of the establishment of its provisional government, an ordinance was proposed to clear Japanese colonial remnants in local schools.

Jeju Provincial Council Education Committee member Song Chang Kwon said that an ordinance was proposed to establish a committee to devise plans for cleaning up the Japanese colonial remnants.

Some schools in the island have sculptures of pro-Japanese personnels and Japanese-style school names and trees.

교육현장 일제 잔재 청산 조례안 발의

대한민국 임시정부 수립 100주년을 맞아
학교현장에 일제 식민지 잔재를 청산하기 위한 조례가 발의됐습니다.

제주도의회 교육위원회 송창권 의원은
이 같은 내용을 골자로 한
제주도교육청 일제강점기 식민 잔재 청산에 관한 조례안을
입법예고했다고 밝혔습니다.

이 조례안은
식민 잔재 청산을 위한 계획 수립과
일제 식민잔재 청산위원회 설치 등을 규정하고 있습니다.

현재 제주지역 일부 학교에는
친일인사의 조형물이나
일제식 교명과 교목 등이 여전히 남아 있는 것으로 조사됐습니다.
