2. MAB-ICC to review application for Biosphere Reserve expansion
Brand to become available for local agriculture and fishery products

An application for expanding the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Jeju will be reviewed at the 31st session of the Man and the Biosphere Programme International Co-ordinating Council (MAB-ICC) at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris from June 17th to 21st.

The Ministry of Environment and Korean National Commission for UNESCO submitted an application to designate the entire island as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve last August.

The UNESCO added Jeju to its world network of Biosphere Reserves in 2002, designating core areas of the island comprising Hallasan National Park, two stream corridors and three islets.

Once the application passed, it will quadruple designated areas to 387,000 square meters and enable agriculture and fishery products to use the UNESCO? Biosphere Reserve brand.

제주도에 따르면,
오는 21일 프랑스 파리에서 열리는
유네스코 국제조정 이사회에서
제주의 생물권 보전지역을 확대하는 심사가 열립니다.

확대안이 원안대로 통과되면
면적은 지금보다 4배 이상인 38만 7천여 제곱미터로 늘어나고
기존 임업뿐 아니라 농수산물에도
생물권보전지역 브랜드를 활용할 수 있을 전망입니다.

앞서 환경부와 유네스코 한국위원회 사무국은
지난해 8월
제주도 전역을 유네스코 생물권보전지역으로
확대 지정하는 신청서를 전달했습니다.
