This week on Jeju: A to Z, Todd Thacker takes a brief look at Seongsan Sunrise Peak, a remarkable volcanic formation with great geological and cultural significance. As we’ll hear now, its popularity has prompted officials to reduce access to the peak and raise prices from next month.

From a scientific perspective, Seongsan Sunrise Peak is labelled an archetypal tuff cone. It formed thousands of years ago when a volcanic eruption suddenly and violently came into contact with cold ocean waves. The steep cliffs offer geologists and volcanologists excellent opportunities to study its geological treasures.

At nearly 180 meters in height, Ilchulbong's castle-like form dominates the northeastern coast of Jeju Island. Inside its concave summit, which is 600 meters in diameter, farmers once grew bamboo and other crops. Now, though, its precious geological and cultural significance is well recognized and protected.

Seongsan Sunrise Peak was designated a Natural Monument of Korea in the year 2000, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 2007, and a Global Geoparks Network site in 2010.

Given its domestic and international prestige, it has become an extremely popular destination. Millions of visitors take photographs and videos of its beauty, and many make the steep climb to its summit as well.

In light of its popularity, officials have announced new measures from next month to stem damage from overuse.

Beginning July 1st, access to the top of Seongsan Sunrise Peak will be restricted on the first Monday of the month. However, use of the lower observation deck and coastal trail will be free of charge on that day.

Prices, too, will more than double. The new entrance fee will be 5,000 won for adults, 2,500 won for children, up from 2,000 won and 1,000 won respectively.

Given the importance of this site to Jeju islanders and the world, these new measures are a small price to pay to preserve this UNESCO World Natural Heritage site for generations to come.
