1. 4·3 symposium held at UN headquarters on June 20
Speakers point to U.S. participation in April 3rd massacre

The April 3rd Peace Foundation and the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations held an international symposium under the theme of “The April 3rd Incident: Human Rights, Responsibility and Reconciliation” at the UN Headquarters in New York City on June 20th.

The symposium featured testimonies from the bereaved families and presentations calling for clarification of U.S. involvement in the tragic event.

In a keynote speech, Bishop Kang U-il said the U.S. should reveal its stance regarding the incident, saying that it was the U.S. military leadership that formulated policies and ordered the Korean army and police to execute and massacre civilians.

University of Chicago Professor Bruce Cummings agreed with him. He said that the U.S. cannot avoid blame.

이번 심포지엄은 '제주 4·3의 진실과 책임 그리고 화해'를 주제로 4.3 유족들의 증언과
미국 책임 규명을 요구하는 주제발표 등이
마련됐습니다.

강우일 주교는
기조발표에서 4.3 당시 학살과 처형은
군경이 했지만, 정책을 수립하고 명령을
이행한 것은 미군 지도부였다며 미국 당국이
어떤 식으로든 입장을 표명해야 한다고
말했습니다.

브루스 커밍스 시카고대학 교수도
미국이 한국 군부와 군경을 이끌었다며
4.3에 대해 미국의 실질적 책임을
피할 수 없다고 주장했습니다.
