2. Lawmaker Oh calls for garlic supply and demand control
Seoul to increase its purchases to 37,000t

Seoul is planning to control supply and demand of garlic in order to stabilize its market price. Garlic is expected to be overproduced this year.

Democratic Party of Korea Lawmaker Oh Young-hoon said that Seoul and the ruling party held a meeting at the National Assembly on Wednesday to discuss price and measures to stabilize supply and demand of the crop.

Seoul decided to increase the government's purchases from 12,000 to 37,000 tons and expand its reserves from 5,000 to 23,000 tons.

This year in Jeju, garlic production volume is expected to increase by 12% than last year. Officials predict a 10% excess garlic supply in nationwide.

과잉생산이 예상되는
마늘 가격 안정화를 위해 정부가 수급 조절에 나섭니다.

더불어민주당 오영훈 국회의원에 따르면
당정은 25일 국회에서
마늘 가격과 수급안정대책에 대한 회의를 갖고
정부 수매 물량을
당초 1만 2천톤에서 3만 7천톤으로 늘리기로 결정했습니다.

특히 이 가운데 정부 비축량을
당초 5천톤에서
2만 3천톤으로 확대하기로 했습니다.

올해 마늘 생산량은 제주만 하더라도
지난해보다 12% 늘어난
3만 6천톤에 이르는 등
전국적으로 10% 이상의 과잉공급이 예상되고 있습니다.
