This week on Jeju: A to Z, Todd Thacker profiles a rare sight on the island, a waterfall in Gangjeong-dong, Seogwipo that appears only after prolonged, heavy rain.
The island’s rainy season may, on occasion, send travellers indoors for a hot beverage and to dry off. But when it rains heavily here, there are places on Jeju that come alive in a literal torrent of beauty.
[CG Slug] Eongtto Waterfall in Gangjeong-dong, Seogwipo
One such hidden gem is Eongtto (엉또) Waterfall, a sight in Seogwipo which is as rare as it is popular.
Due to the geography of this area, the 50-meter cliff remains dry for most of the year.
[CG Slug] Appears after 70mm or more of rainfall
The falls only appear if the area gets over 70 millimeters of rain over a relatively short period of time.
And with the prolonged downpour, it can become an unforgettable marvel.
The waterfall gets its name from a combination of words in the Jeju language. An ‘eong’ is a cave no larger than a small hut. ‘Tto’ means entrance. Together this hints at something small which stays hidden in the forest.
[CG Slug] Accessible via Olle Trail 7-1
To get to the base of the waterfall, the easiest way is to take Jeju Olle walking trail No. 7-1 in the area of Wolsan (월산) village, Gangjeong-dong (강정동).

To experience this rare sight in person, you’ll have to time your visit soon after a heavy downpour. But as the waterfall is recognized to be one of Jeju’s most beautiful sites, you’re sure to be rewarded.
