Immigration screening failure puts justice ministry on the defensive

An Indian family has been belatedly found to have departed from Jeju International Airport to Taiwan using fake passports.

According to the Ministry of Justice and the Jeju branch of Korea Airports Corporation, three Indians entered Jeju on June 9th and left for Taiwan on the 19th with forged Dutch passports.

Immigration officials failed to initially recognize their fake passports. They knew that the Indian family departed from Korea with fake passports after the Taiwanese immigration office reported that the family were deported to Korea by using fake passports.

The family was repatriated to India after they were deported back to Korea and banned from entering Korea.

The Ministry of Justice said officials did not doubt that their passports were fake as they had numerous travel records to U.S and Europe. The Indian family was passing through South Korea to disguise themselves as tourists to reach Canada.

지난 9일 제주에 들어온
36살 A씨 등 인도인 일가족 3명은
열흘 뒤인 지난 19일
위조된 네덜란드 여권을 이용해
대만으로 출국했습니다.

이들은
대만에서 입국이 거부돼 국내로 되돌아온다는 보고를 받고서야
출입국 당국이 위조 여권을 인지한 것으로 전해져
빈축을 사고 있습니다.

현재 이들은
우리나라로 돌아온 뒤 본국으로 송환조치 됐으며
위조 여권을 사용한 혐의로 입국금지됐습니다.

법무부는
이들이 캐나다 입국을 목표로
관광객으로 위장하기 위해 우리나라를 거쳤는데,
여권에 미국과 유럽에서 여행한 기록이 많아
의심할 수 없었다고 해명했습니다.
